Chapter Six

“Your père is threatening to disown you.” Ernestine Allurd strolled into his office and dropped several files in François’ inbox.

“That’s nothing new. Father waffles between firing me and making me partner on a daily basis.” He shrugged. “If he lets me go I will move back home and live off the wealth you two have accumulated. Say au revoir, retirement fund.”

“The hell you will.” Ernestine claimed the seat opposite his desk. “I spoke to Sabine. She asked about you.”

“Did you tell her I was fine, living my life to the fullest as Jean Pierre would have wanted?” This was another reason to avoid work. There wasn’t a day that went by where someone wasn’t peering at him as if he wasn’t a pitiful man or bringing up his friend’s name. A little under a year later and the people around him still wouldn’t let go of Jean Pierre’s death, so how could he?

He’d found a solution though. Sex—get Melandie out of his system and everything else would disappear. Or backfire and you’ll crave her touch more. He groaned. His second option, death, wasn’t as appealing as it once was.

“What is wrong with you?” His mother narrowed her eyes.

“You ask me that every time you see me.” He wiped a palm down his face. If he was honest with his mom would she finally leave him alone? Or would his parents try to have him committed? He was crazy—there was no denying that—but it was no longer the wild fun that everyone wanted to be a part of. Since Jean Pierre’s death his mood had been dark, almost vicious, and he wasn’t so stupid that he didn’t recognize that. “I’m tired of being checked on like a child. I’m here, aren’t I? I do my job—mostly. Why can’t everyone leave me alone to heal my way? I have never conformed to anyone’s ideas of how I should behave, so why would I start now?” He closed his mouth with an audible snap.

The pained expression on Ernestine’s face spoke louder than if she had actually said the words. Her lips were pinched and her eyes were wide. He couldn’t work up the energy to care.

Ernestine exhaled. “You are my son, and no matter your behavior, good or bad, that fact remains unchanged. Don’t tell me how I should care about you. I will excuse your tantrum—this time. Next time you decide to voice your frustration I suggest you remember whom you are talking to because if you ever talk to me in that tone again…I will come across that desk and beat your head in with that lamp.” She nodded at the metal light fixture between them. “Which is my right since I gave birth to you.” She eased from her seat and peered down at him. “Jean Pierre is dead, and if you think you’re tired of everyone fawning all over you, imagine how exhausted I am walking on eggshells around you. Grow up, François. Shit happens. Take pleasure in the fact it’s not you who fell off a cliff.
